Psorasis Treatment
How if works :
Blood is taken in the same way as a blood test. This is centrifuged or processed by aphoresis. The platelet rich plasma (PRP) is removed and activating solutions are added. PDGF – platelet dermal growth factor, EGF-1 epidermal growth factor, FGF – fibroblast growth factor and TGF-B1 transforming growth factor B1 are all activated in the process. The plasma and platelets are then injected into the skin.
These factors together with the plasma and platelets result in a reduction or termination of the autoimmune inflammatory reaction in the skin. This results in remission or elimination of psorasis in the areas treated.
Usually only 1-2 treatments are required to attain long lasting remission or elimination.
Effects :
Around 50% of those treated have had complete cure or long lasting remission. Around 30% have seen a reduction in their psorasis. There are 10-20% of patients who show little or no response. In some patients it has led to a delay in the appearance of their psorasis of 6-12 months, after which they have been treated again with long lasting remission and in others it has led to a complete remission of the condition and can possibly be regarded as a cure
Side effects :
Swelling post injection is common which will last around 24 hrs, but in rare individuals it has lasted up to 4 days. Bruising can occur and there is some minor discomfort with the injections. There is no risk of allergy. There is some pain associated with the injections but this can be reduced with Nitrous gas or intravenous analgesia.
Cost :
For those with extensive psorasis, treating a small area with the tube system may be preferable to assess response. If this is successful larger areas using the Angel PRP system can be used for treatment.
$500 per tube (3ml of 1.7x platlet concentration) covering around 100cm2. For larger areas the Angel PRP system is used and cost are between $1200-2000.
